POEM 1

Personification

The car engine (Haley)

The car engine purrs in my lap
The car engine erupts at the slightest evocation
The car engine drinks too much
The car engine doesn't ask too many questions
He knows his job, and does it well
The car engine is exhausted and worn down from years of running, but from what?
The car engine just wants to leave
The car engine reminisces of his ex-wife and children
The car engine has a sweet tooth
The car engine knows he needs to be healthier but he just doesn’t care
The car engine sits in silence, waiting to be useful again
The car engine dreams of a life without wheels
The car engine lies awake at night wondering what he did to deserve this
The car engine is a tortured soul waiting for his end

The Drunk Man (Luis O.)

The drunk man sits alone at night
The drunk man hunches over holding an empty bottle
The drunk man drowns in his thoughts
The drunk man feels deeper than he has before
The drunk man acts on emotion
The drunk man is lost
The drunk man only wished to forget
The drunk man yearns for a lost love
The drunk man lays in a field stargazing
The drunk man speaks with no sense
The drunk man stumbles everywhere he goes
The drunk man spends his last dollar
The drunk man hurts his family
The drunk man promised he would never drink again

*The Ants / Magdalyn D.

The ants are a thousand-member army always marching marching marching
The ants sting like soldiers thrusting poison-tipped bayonets into enemy lines
The ants boil out of their anthill like magma dribbling down a volcano
The ants are unstoppable, no matter the barriers they infest like clockwork
The ants are a battle that only chemical warfare might win
The ants aren’t bloodthirsty, their weapons raised only against provocations
The ants raise their dowsing rod antennae to the unexplored horizon
The ants march like single-filed schoolkids to the beat of a scent
The ants sniff food down like peasants. They gorge themselves like kings
The ants carry burden on their shoulders without complaint
The ants are a conveyor belt from resource to nest
The ants are caretakers, the "family men" tending to brood and queen
The ants are a cycle, little six-legged phoenix, soldier reborn anew

*THE SHOE WITH NO LACES (Jaelyn O)

The shoe with no laces is useless
The shoe with no laces lays idle without a reason for being
The shoe with no laces is alone
The shoe with no laces sits and thinks about everything it can’t do
The shoe with no laces once had a dream of going places and doing incredible things
The shoe with no laces once had laces
The shoe with no laces no longer has them so exists without purpose
The shoe with no laces is shoved into the back of the closet, unseen and forgotten
The shoe with no laces watches the shoes with laces fulfill their dreams and wonders why
    it can’t too
The shoe with no laces wonders if it’ll get its old laces back or will it get new ones
The shoe with no laces cries (weeps)
The shoe with no laces hopes
The shoe with no laces dreams once again
The shoe with no laces is determined to get laces again, old or new

*THE ROSE  (Gracie G)

The rose in a glass makes me think of the Beast
The rose draws blood when we tell a white lie
The rose is all things beauty and all things pain
The rose rises in the spring and falls in the autumn
The rose is a declaration of love
The rose makes us extra sorrowful in our grief
The rose is pure like a dove
The rose is enchanting like a shooting star
The rose is like a desire that is far out of reach
The rose is like a farewell when we aren’t quite ready
The rose makes us fall way over our heads (?)
The rose is twenty seconds of insane courage
The rose makes us decide if they love us or not
The rose is passionate about the ones it loves

*THE SCALE (Vinny W)

The scale has seen a lot
The scale is full of residue
The scale has weighed so many substances
The scale fits in your pocket
The scale weighs in grams and in ounces
The scale can make you money
The scale has saved so much time
The scale keeps things honest and accurate
The scale has caused problems
The scale needs to be tared
The scale is covered in mistakes
The scale has ruined lives
The scale shows you what’s left
The scale is a means to an end

 The Teddy Bear (Megan A)

The teddy bear sits in the corner of the room on a shelf
The teddy bear once helped watch over a baby
The teddy bear ensured that she took every breathe
The teddy bear once helped make a child feel special
The teddy bear ensured that there was always a smile on her face
The teddy bear once helped a teenager through a breakup
The teddy bear ensured that she pieced her heart back together
The teddy bear once helped an adult through the death of their mother
The teddy bear ensured that she picked herself back up and kept going
The teddy bear once helped an old woman survive through her deteriorating body
The teddy bear ensured that she took every breath
The teddy bear sits in the corner of the room on a shelf
The teddy bear once helped watch over a baby
The teddy bear now watches over an old women
